Via Eurasia

Via Egnatia Soundscape

The first performance of the Via Egnatia soundscape has just taken place in Zürich.  It was scripted by Serge Honegger and inspired by Sandra King-Savic, who, with Manuela Casari, formed an association called “Via Egnatia” with a view to increasing awareness of the marginalised cultural region of the Balkans in Switzerland, using an artistic approach. This live-soundscape, performed by 7 professional musicians, will tour in 15 different Swiss museums in 2020 (hopefully) and 2021. In the live-soundscape performed in museums there are long passages with just gentle sounds or a subtle weaving of melodies as well as vocals.

Sandra is a lecturer in migration and cultural studies at the University of St. Gallen and hiked the Via Egnatia from Durres to Thessaloniki in 2016. Along the way she collected data for her research project and talked to the locals about their everyday life, their perception of the Via Egnatia, the Balkans and the “West”. The dramaturg Serge Honegger used this material to write a script.

Partners in this project are Fuorivia Egnatia, “Balkans Beyond Borders”, the Via Egnatia Foundation and the Culture Routes Society; the last two are founders of the Cultural Association of the Via Eurasia, a walking route. which includes the Via Egnatia.
